Dash finds the misplaced notebook at the Strand Bookstore and decides to play along with Lily's game- leaving clues about where to find the notebook and also leaving a piece of themselves in the pages.
Over the course of holiday season, both Dash and Lily wonder if their relationship can only live on within the pages of the red moleskin or if their in-person persona will live up to how they perceived each other.
What I initially drew me to this book was the ode to New York. If you frequent my blog then you know that my of my book purchases are from the Strand. I also wanted to read this during the holiday season to coincide with the story- I suppose to make it more realistic... magical in away since there's nothing like the holidays in New York.
I laughed at a lot of the references to the holiday madness that goes on- FAO Schwarz on Christmas Eve? Yeah I've done that and it's not fun no matter how many toys I'm surrounded by. But aside from it's obvious attraction, I enjoyed reading about these two characters.
I can't say that I cared for either of them or anticipated the end to see if they finally meet. Not to say that I didn't find either of them to be good characters- they seemed like kids that I knew or went to school with, but I felt like even if they never meet and the only way they "spoke" to each other was through the notebook I would be completely fine with that.
There's always something about just writing, isn't there? Not typing, I mean good old fashioned hand written notes. There's always been something more personal about it- your handwriting, the corrections and even the color pen you use.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a light holiday read.
