Waiting on Wednesday (5)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights an upcoming title that I'm eagerly anticipating.

So I decided to feature this since I'm currently reading Clockwork Angel and this is coming out next week! I honestly haven't read the synopsis for this as to not have it spoil what I'm currently reading. I'm also excited to be going to the book signing launch (anyone else going?)!

Title: Clockwork Prince
Author: Cassandra Clare
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Steampunk
Publication Date: December 6th, 2011
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

Musing Mondays (4)

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.

Wow... it seems as though I haven't participated in Musing Mondays since Halloween>_< I already know one of my resolutions for the new year will be to be more active with this blog! Haha. Okay now on to this week's musing...

Will you be buying books for the holidays this year? If so, for whom and why?

I'm going to get a couple of friends a book or two because I know they've been wanting them. I can't divulge what those titles are because they read this blog;)
I'm also thinking about getting a book for my family Secret Santa, but that's a huge maybe because I'm just going on this book craze of mine and I'm sure this person would probably want something else. Can't say for whom or what title(s) because a family member or two might come across this.

Oh and of course I'll be buying myself some books... even though I put myself on a book-buying ban. Still. I deserve to treat myself! Haha!

BN had a 50% off one-day sale for this and other selected titles! Thank you to my sister for sending me the email about it! I did tweet about it, albeit just once, but still... I did tell you!
I already started it and it's just so beautiful! I wish it wasn't so big and heavy so I could just take it around with me. Also, very hard to put on a shelf due to it's size.

Title: Pyxis

I won this from Wendy at A Cupcake and a Latte and actually found out by K.C. Neal herself! It was such a wonderful surprise since I entered the giveaway not long after read Michele's review and it intrigued me intensely.

Atlantis exists. Of course, you don't know this because it's hidden from our world. Eleven thousand years ago, the Greeks and Egyptians attacked Atlantis. In order to protect the island, Aruc, a sorcerer, created an illusion of the island sinking and then put a barrier in place to prevent outsiders from seeing or gaining access to Atlantis. But Aruc knew that the isolated island was not safe forever. In fact, he cast the very prophecy that predicted the bleak future of the island. His prophecy became known as Profiteia ek Epanastasi.

From Blood of Evil and Blood of True
A Boy is Born and this Prophecy Due
For When the Abyss Rises to Make Its Mark
The Savior is the Boy with Royal Blood Half Dark

The sorcerer then designed a plan that would ensure the survival of the island he loved. For thousands of years, Atlantis continued in peace and prosperity with no need for the plan.

Sixteen years ago, the boy foreseen in Aruc's prophecy was born. Familiar with the Prophecy, and knowing that one day the boy would be needed to save Atlantis, the royal family sent the baby off the island to ensure his safety in the world outside Atlantis.

Today, the Knights of the Abyss wage war on Atlantis. Sixteen-year-old Trey Atlas is the only one that can stop them from destroying all that Atlantis stands for and, as a result, erasing his own mysterious past.

Book Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door

Lola dreams of becoming a great fashion designer and her outfits proves she has the talent and imagination for it. She has a happy life with her dads in the Castro District of San Francisco, a loyal best friend and an older rock musician boyfriend.

Everything is perfect. That is until the Bell family moves back next door. Although it's one particular Bell member that she will have to confront after having her heart broken since the last time he lived next door.

After having read Stephanie Perkins' first book, Anna and the French Kiss, I had incredibly high hopes for this one and it didn't disappoint! Fans of Anna will enjoy this as much or even more, as I did.

The characters were well written and Perkins' weaves in details of fashion so seamlessly which coincides with Lola's unique fashion sense, but without losing sight of the bigger story. Although I think that fashion plays a big role in this book- Lola's "dressing up" can be seen as her way to hide from her true self and what she really wants.

Cricket Bell is the one that she wanted since childhood. He's incredibly talented in his own way, as being a direct descendant of the most famous Bell of all and genuinely kindhearted  to all he meets- the epitome of the type of boy your parents wish you would take home.

What I really liked about Lola, is that this had more drama and situations that you believe can happen. Unlike Anna where it was almost too good to be true. The things Lola seems to have to deal with can be easily identified with a lot of people and it made her and the supporting characters all the more enjoyable to read... notably when a couple of familiar characters show up!

All in all it was a very good read and although I had more fun with Anna, this followup had more depth and felt more grown up. But it was predictable... even moreso than its predecessor, but still very much as delightful.

Rating: ★★★★ 4.5 stars

Happy Reading! :)
I'm going to implement a "one-book buying " limit for myself after this week since the holidays are coming up and I have quite a few books I want to get through before the 2012 Debut Author Challenge, because goodness knows that's going to be a doozy for me.

Anyway, on to the good stuff...

From Barnes and Noble:

Title: Unearthly
Author: Cynthia Hand
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

Armed with a 25% off coupon I set out to find something that was inexpensive (paperback) and on my wishlist. Too many to choose from, but this was on their "Teen Favorites" shelf and with the coupon it came to about $7. Sweet.

From Strand Bookstore:

Title: Legend
Author: Marie Lu
Genres: Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Dystopian
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

YAY! So happy to have found this and there was so sign of it being an ARC or non-selling copy, so I didn't feel bad taking the one and only copy there ;)

Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

Okay, I know I am SO late on this series>_< I originally had mixed thoughts on this and I knew a few people that read it but didn't care too much for it. BUT I did notice that a lot of you gave it a high rating on goodreads, so for $6 I thought I'd give it a shot.

From Kobo:

Title: The Strange Case of Finley Jane
Author: Kady Cross
Genres: Young Adult, Steampunk
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

I recently downloaded the Kobo app onto my phone and grabbed this free e-book. Since this is the prequel to The Girl in the Steel Corset (something I still need to get my hands on!) I thought it would be a nice way to test the waters.

For Review:

Title: Night Fish
Author: Kristine Ong Muslim
Genres: Poetry
Elevated Books | Goodreads

Title: The Secret of Lies
Author: Barbara Forte Abate
Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads

Waiting on Wedneday (4)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights an upcoming title that I'm eagerly anticipating.

I love Murakami! I've read most of his books and I've enjoyed all of them. He has such a unique writing style and it can be little crazy and your mind can go to places that you didn't think it could, but it's such an adventure and you never know how the story will end!
This is his latest one and like his most popular title, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, this is 3 books in one.

Title: 1Q84
Author: Haruki Murakami
Publication Date: October 25th, 2011
Amazon | Book Depository | Goodreads

*A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Amazon | Book Depository | Goodreads

I finally got it! Plus I had a Barnes and Noble coupon for 50% off so even better:)

Rot & Ruin

Author: Jonathan Maberry
Genres: Young Adult, Horror, Zombies, Dystopian
Amazon | Book Depository | Goodreads

I had another coupon and I although I wasn't originally going to get this, I've been looking for it for awhile. Thanks to Christy of Love of Books for the recommend!
Title: Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
Author: Mindy Kaling
Genres: Non-Fiction, Autobiography, Humor
Amazon | Book Depository | Goodreads

Such a 180 from the previous two, huh?:P
I went to the book signing on Wednesday and waited about an hour and a half to get it signed! It was so packed there (it was her only NYC signing) so she cut her discussion/Q&A short so that she could get to everyone. No personalizations, but she took the time to make small talk with everyone and allowed pics! I barely let out a "hello" before she said "Oh my god, your hair is so kick-ass!" LOL. She continued with the hair talk and completely ignored my friend:P Which is fine since he didn't buy her book. Haha!
